(Crested) Sharpbill

April 11, 2011

Hello from Ubatuba!

Yesterday, me and all my group of 10 birders had smashing views of the Sharpbill !!!
It was just ten yards from us and he had enough time to watch it thru. the scope.
What a bird!!!
Of Course: It is a Cotinga!!!
Some people / books calls it “Crested” Sharpbill but, being the only one Sharpbill in South America, there is no need to complicate his name that already says everything!

May you all have a great day & wonderful week!

Yours,

Paulo Boute.

Carajas National Forest – A True Bird Paradise!

April 2, 2011
Hello!

I’m back from Carajás.
It was very good!
On our last day, there, we went to the “Aguas Claras” Road.
Still with very few traffic & lots of birds: White Hawk, White-crested Guan and Purple-throated Fruitcrow.
I recommend Carajás a lot!

Best Regards,

Yesterday, I had a chance to go out for some birding with my host.
We got a some very nice birds such: Fox Sparrow, Tundra Swan, Hooded Merganser and Red-Headed Duck. Being this last one, seen by my host for the first time on that area!
A very interesting fact is: He has birding there for the past 25 years!

I had superb views of a Jaguar at the Pantanal – Swiming across the river, then, later coming out of the water & watching us – eye to eye – for a while then, climbing a bank & leaving the area…

I will also shall return to Manaus after a couple of years…The purpose: To scout a new Jungle Lodge and also meet friends – Old and new ones…

Then, I will go to Rio to guide for a few days at REGUA…

In the mean time, I had a chance to visit the family in Aracaju, spending Valentine’s day with my wife & watching my soon palying soccer and making goals!!!

The Double-toothed Kite.

April 13, 2010
Today, I would like to share with you a personal observation done by Thomas Sigrist, on his book: “Birds of Brazil”.
He says he had seen the Double-toothed Kite, following a group of monkeys, the reason would be the fact the monkeys where scaring cicadas. But, at a certain moment the monkey stopped for some rest. The Kite, then, started chasing the monkeys, trying to force them to continue moving thru. the branches!!!
That would be something wonderful to see!!!

Birds & Coffee: What a great combination!

April 9, 2010

Hello!

For those that already birded in Brazil and for those that still are planning a first trip to this wonderful country, might wondering the reasons of the title of my BLOG today…

Well, Brazil is known by its coffee…but, not the way we drink it…We like it as strong as it can be…turning even a small cup of coffee into a true & powerful “cafein weapon!”:-)

The good birding lodges serve them, very early…usually, half an hour before the sunrise…sometimes…I bring it to the bedroom of my guests – What a surprise for them to get such “room service” so early…
I tell you: A good coffee , as the first thing in the morning – Helps a lot!
Then, later combined the excitment of seeing Lifers…makes a perfect birding time!

Enjoy the Weekend & a nice cup of coffee too!

Paulo Boute.

Birding in the Morning!

March 4, 2010

Hello!

Someone, once said: Birding in the afternoon is never as good, as birding in the morning – Specially, at the Tropics. This week, I had to go to the airport, very early in the morning – Before the sunrise… When, I returned home, I drove thru. a very nice area with Palm Trees – I could hear the birds & see some of the flying…What a wonderful way to start a day! It brought me memories of so many mornings that I birded in so many places in Brazil… The excitement of seeing birds all the day long…

 Yours,

Paulo Boute.
